Kids and Family
Autism Spectrum Disorder Related Services
Kids and Family strives to provide the highest quality services to children with ASD. We know that these early years are crucial
to your child's future development, and work to support our families through every step.
Prior to beginning ASD related services, a Developmental Behavior Assessment (DBA) is conducted over the course of several
days or hours in the child's natural environments. During the DBA, detailed information about a child's skills and behaviors is
obtained and analyzed to identify appropriate supports and services for the child and family. The DBA includes parent/caregiver
interviews, observations and informal assessment instruments. A review meeting is held and an assessment report is provided
to the family and team members. The goal is to share relevant information about the child's overall development and to discuss
the results of the DBA.
In order to address a child's delays, a variety of early intervention services may be recommended. An intervention team works
with the child and families and may use several of the following approaches according to the child and family's individual
strengths and needs:
" A total language approach: This approach includes gestures, signs and visual and tactile cues to enhance comprehension and
facilitate expressive language. Activities include requesting, turn-taking, following simple directions, receptive identification
(pictures and 3D objects), and non-verbal imitation (gestures such as clapping, waving, or blowing a kiss) all with the aim of
promoting communication.
" Sensory integration approach: Sensory integration addresses the way that a child processes the variety of sensations he
receives through touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing. Sensory integration involves determining any over-sensitivity or
under-sensitivity to stimuli and developing strategies (often called a sensory diet) to implement throughout the day to improve
a child's processing and self-regulation skills. Routines like mealtime, bedtime, and bath time are often targeted as
opportunities to address sensory needs and improve functional participation.
" Behavior modification approach: This approach focuses on using positive reinforcement, repetition, verbal prompts and
physical cues to encourage positive behaviors and replace negative behaviors with constructive ones.
" Play-based approach: The play-based approach takes into account a child's individual personality and interests. Providers
follow the child's lead to encourage more reciprocal play with family and peers. Families and early interventionists work
together to provide children with opportunities to engage with peers within daycare/classroom settings and/or by attending
community events and venues such as the Please Touch Museum, local library, and playground.
All ASD related services have a functional focus and include consultation time for families so that interventions occur in the
child's natural environment throughout their day. Kids and Family Early Intervention Agency places emphasis on the importance
of parental and caregiver involvement in the intervention process. The roles of parents, other family members and caregivers
are critical to the overall success of the child's progress. Continuous informal assessment and data collection are performed in
order to make appropriate adaptations regarding a child's progress and success.
